The canary seed plant Phalaris Canariens originating in the canary islands, was introduced and adapted to the Canadian prairies back in the 70's by the canary seed development commission of saskatchewan.
In 2016 crop production of the glabrous (hairless) varieties of canary seeds were approved for human consumption by Health Canada and the Canadian grain commission.
The FDA has given it GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status.
Alpiste comes in either flour or seed form and can be added to bread, bagels, flour, pasta, or eaten as snack food.
