De-hulled Canary seed for humans are known by its Spanish name Alpiste.
A member of the cereal grain family like wheat, oats, barley and rye, Alpiste contains bran, germ and starchy endosperm and is very high in protein and rich in amino acids.
Canary seeds are a simple, nutritious, sugar free, gluten-free plant based ingredient that can be used in vegan, vegetarian, and meat-free dishes.
The canary seed plant Phalaris Canariens originating in the canary islands, was introduced and adapted to the Canadian prairies back in the 70's by the canary seed development commission of saskatchewan.
In 2016 crop production of the glabrous (hairless) varieties of canary seeds were approved for human consumption by Health Canada and the Canadian grain commission.
The FDA has given it GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status.
Alpiste comes in either flour or seed form and can be added to bread, bagels, flour, pasta, or eaten as snack food.
